Fifteen

I needed a break from home, work, and school, and I found my break in the form of a playdate at the park Aiden had arranged during a brief conversation two days ago. Apparently he had younger siblings, and my siblings needed some peace and playtime.

They bounced in their seats the entire drive. All I did was stop the car and they were off, running towards the very active playground.

I took a deep breath and muttered to myself, “Go run, be free, you little gremlins.”

Watching from the car seemed like the smart thing to do for a second. They scaled ledges and climbed things that weren’t meant to be climbed, leaving other kids in a sense of awe and parents and guardians to hold their breaths.

A tap on the window made me jump as I looked over. Aiden was standing there with a smile on his lips. “You planning on getting off or are we sitting in your car?”

I shrugged but smiled. “How much supervision do kids really need?”

He laughed but opened my door for me, saying without saying, Get your butt out of the car. I stepped out with a silent chuckle. Aiden had been nothing but nice and forthcoming with me since we met. It was the genuine interest of a new friend, not a guy looking for someone vulnerable. He checked on me every day, made a point to have a full conversation with me at least once every week, either one-on-one or with Gemma and her girlfriend.

“Your sibs are going to leave a lasting impression on Summerville,” he said as we walked to a bench, his hands in the pocket of his hoodie.

I bit my lip and turned for a moment as I scanned the park, counting one, two, and three before sitting down next to him. Summerville was a neighborhood in San Ren, one of the cleanest and most uppity. It’s where he lived, not that my siblings were strangers to this park. I used to bring them often.

“They tend to do that no matter where we go,” I said. “But why are we here at nine in the morning on a Saturday?”

Aiden looked at me, his expression showing just how unhappy he was about the time.

“Because my brothers thought they hadn’t tortured me enough recently, so they took it upon themselves to tell my dad that we were going to the park this morning. I wasn’t going to suffer alone.”

I laughed as he yawned.

“Glad you're amused,” he remarked.

“I needed this little excursion, I guess,” I said, leaning into my seat. “Freya is off doing gods know what and last I know, Mom is driving to the prison to see her husband.”

He was quiet for a moment before he wrapped his arm around my shoulders and hugged me. I let my head rest on his shoulder. Everything about him reminded me of Remi and our friendship, something that was whole, genuine. Not that I saw Aiden as a replacement or substitute, but it was nice to have someone there.
